The story begins in August 2017, after finishing our second indoor bar we felt we needed the ability to be outside so started looking at mobile vehicle options. The thought of horseboxes, caravans, land rover defenders and air streams came and went. We just felt they had been done and our goal was to tackle something epic!
The search came to an end when whilst searching through Gumtree, we stumbled across a beautiful Orange 1980s Bristol VR double decker bus and a light bulb went off. It was fate. One message and 3 days later we tabled an offer which was eventually accepted. It was a whirlwind of a week and before we knew it we owned a 9.5 tonne vehicle with nowhere to put it. The hunt for a home for the 9m long 2.5m wide bus began. Luckily it didn’t take long as we stumbled across a local caravan park who allowed us to rent two spaces to store the bus… life saver.
The next 4 months were a battle against the winter weather, leaky windows, no power for tools, ripping out old parts and general refurbishment. The project was a very steep learning curve but with the guidance and skills of the Whittling Woodpecker aka Martin Edwards joinery and all round handy man we made great progress.
We replaced all old parts, including walls, floors, steps. Took out all of the previous owners dodgy furniture including a half tonne AGA, mouldy wet room and Astro Turfed top floor. In March 2018 the bus was sent to Tiverton for its spray job and serving hatch cut into the side, it took 10 weeks but it came back a gorgeous gun metal grey which changed the whole look of the bus dramatically as well as the perfect serving hatch being installed professionally. The next 6 months was a race to get the bus finished.
It needed a hand made canopy to protect from the unpredictable British weather – it now can be two heights or off all together. We also had a challenge to get the lighting and stereo system linked up, thanks to Aidy H-P Electrical who really did work through the night to get the electrics just right for its first wedding back in May 2018. Another external touch that was finished last summer was the logo and the tinting of the windows which was done by Orbital Signs in Tiverton, these guys did not mess about, a great price and was done with 72 hours – a fantastic service.
The goal was to create a great place to be, a party bus complete with full operating cocktail bar and a slick top drinking deck. 12 months later we have finally got to a point where we are taking bookings and welcoming guests onboard. There are a few minor touches left to complete however we feel there will always be things we will look to improve on, but we feel we have achieved 90% of our goal and the feedback so far has been bang on the money.
